A Bibliographical Reference Tool for the Study of Dutch Socinianism and Antitrinitarianism
Dit boek is uitverkocht.Antitrinitarianism and Socinianism, theologies denying the Holy Trinity and therefore considered to be one of the most horrific heresies by both the Roman Catholic and Protestant Churches, had a substantial influence in the Netherlands during the Golden Age. In particular when the Socinians were expelled from Poland, several so-called Polish Brethren found an asylum in the Dutch Republic, where they were welcomed in predominantly Remonstrant and Mennonite circles. In this tolerant setting they managed to produce their voluminous Bibliotheca fratrum Polonorum, however, clandestinely and with false imprints. In commemoration of the 400th day of the death of Faustus Socinus (1539-1604) all printed sources (Part I) and modern studies (Part II) on this subject, writings of protagonists and their orthodox opponents, are now listed for the very first time. This bibliography, including analytical descriptions of pre-1800 imprints, will offer a necessary reference tool for church historians and scholars of book history.

'Een zeer waardevolle bibliografie van bronnen en secundaire literatuur over het Nederlandse socinianisme is nu verschenen en daaraan is te zien hoezeer deze beweging in Nederland een tijd lang leefde. Ook toont het werk hoe gereformeerde theologen op hoog niveau moesten discussiëren over deze wezenlijke vragen en dat dit die gereformeerde theologie ook bevorderd heeft.' Prof.dr. H.J Seldenhuis in: Nederlands Dagblad, 4 maart 2005. 'Knijff en Visser hebben niet alleen kerk- en boekhistorici met hun degelijk werk een dienst bewezen, maar de tekst op de achterflap kan ook aangevuld worden met neerlandici die in de index hun bekende namen aantreffen als Coornhert, Datheen, Van Effen, Oudaen, Telle en Vondel.' PJV in: De Boekenwereld 21 (2004-2005) 2. '[...] this Bibliography is an extremely valuable tool for any person studying the ideas en developments of the Socinianism. It is hoped that it will be followed by compilations covering other countries such as Poland, Transylvania, England, Germany and the United States.' Marian Hillar in: The Polish Review, Vol. L (2005) nr. 2 'In spite of the digital competition of the Short Title Catalogue of the Netherlands this volume will serve as a welcome first point of reference in the research on Dutch Socinianism and its inclusion of anti-Socinian authors will allow it to serve even the less specialized researcher with many valuable suggestions.' Christian Moser in: Sixteenth Century Journal 3 (2007); 'The Bibliographia Sociniana represents a significant aid for the study of Socinianism, for it provides a great deal of information, even though the descriptions of printings were not based on direct inspection.'
