'For its usefulness and its insightful analysis of Dutch art theory, this book is a fitting cap to Miedema’s stellar career.' Arthur J. DiFuria in: Renaissance Quarterly 73 (2020) 1, p. 253-254
'This is the first comprehensive survey of art literature written in Dutch during the long seventeenth century. In the past twenty-five years studies of individual Dutch treatises on art have become increasingly numerous, and there has also been work on art terminology, which has traced concepts between texts; but no one until now has provided a book-length overview of the whole tradition of writing about art in the Low Countries, from Lambert Lombard (1505/6–66) to Gerard de Lairesse (1641–1711). Hessel Miedema has filled a conspicuous gap in the art historical literature. [...] This uncontroversial tone is typical of the book, in which description is preferred to theorizing. Theorie en praktijk almost reads like a scrupulously taken set of notes, meant to remind Miedema of the content of the books he has read and now presented as a gift to the scholarly community. To those of us who work with these texts, the book is incredibly useful, especially since it is accompanied by a compact disk, which allows for word searches. To those who have not read any Dutch art theory, however, the concision of the descriptions, the absence of an argumentative thread, and the lack of images may make it a daunting introduction to this fascinating corpus of texts.' Paul Taylor in: History of Humanities (herfst 2018), p. 428-430.
'[..] ‘Theorie en Praktijk’ bestaat uit twee delen: het eerste bevat chronologisch geordende teksten over de geschriften en hun auteurs, het tweede bestaat uit een systematisch overzicht van de onderwerpen die zij behandelen, zoals anatomie, licht en kleur. Het geheel biedt een exhaustieve, franjeloze uiteenzetting van een eindeloos intrigerend kunsttijdperk.' - in Collect december 2017 477, p.99
