Ireen Dubel has had a professional career spanning 35 years in Dutch and international development cooperation, with a main focus on women’s rights and gender equality. She has worked for several Dutch NGOs and knowledge institutions, including the Humanist Institute for Co-operation with Developing Countries (Hivos), Mama Cash, the Royal Tropical Institute and the Institute of Social Studies. Her work inspired her to analyse the so far unnoticed history of contemporary Dutch transnational feminist solidarity activism in support of women’s rights and women’s movements in the Global South. She is currently a PhD candidate in political science at the University of Amsterdam where she explores the politics of Dutch transnational feminist solidarity activism focused on the Global South.
She co-edited several books, including Urgency Required, Gay and Lesbian Rights are Human Rights (2010, Hivos), Women, Feminism & Fundamentalism (2007, Humanistics University Press), Cosmetische humanisering? Maatschappelijk verantwoord ondernemen ter discussie (2005, Humanistics University Press), Global civil society, world citizenship and education (2005, Uitgeverij SWP) and co-authored Gender and Organizational Change, Bridging the Gap between Policy and Practice (1997, KIT Press).
